DGCA Medical Requirements

This should be your first step you should embark on before you invest in flying training. The important thing to remember here is that if you are not medically fit up to Class I medical standards, then you cannot become a pilot. Once a pilot, then maintaining a medical fitness to the prescribed standards is mandatory throughout your flying career. This will determine whether you will continue to remain a pilot.

The importance of maintaining good health and developing the best practices for good healthy living cannot be overemphasized.

Hitherto, the all Class 1 medical examinations were conducted only by the IAF medical establishments. Recently, the DGCA has appointed civilian medical establishments and have authorized them to conduct Class 1 medicals. To get a Class 1 medical certification, you must first clear your Class 2 medical examination and get a Previous Medical Record (PMR) file number from the office of the DGCA. Medical Requirements for Flying Training in the USA

For flying training in the USA you will require an FAA Class 1 medical certificate. These can be issued in the USA or here in India. Some Indian aeromedical doctors in Mumbai are authorized to issue an FAA medical certificate.

Unlike the DGCA Medical Examination, the FAA Class 1 medical examination does not require you to conduct the standard battery of pathological tests and X-Rays. This is essentially a physical examination, and is accomplished within a few hours.

Medical Insurance

Under US Law, all students training or studying in the USA shall require a medical insurance. The medical insurance must cover some mandatory minimum contingencies.

This medical insurance is required to cover hospitalization costs in the unforeseen event that you have to be hospitalized. As you would probably be aware, medical costs in the USA can be very expensive and you will need an insurance policy to meet these expenses.

This medical insurance may be taken in India before you leave or may even be taken in the USA. Presently, there are several insurance companies that offer a wide range of insurance policies. Please read the contingencies that the policy covers. Normally, these medical insurance policies do not cover the flying training risks. It is now possible to be able to secure an insurance policy that covers accidental coverage for flying training as well. An additional premium is applicable for this additional risk coverage.

The medical insurance can be extended before its expiry, so it would be useful take an initial insurance for 6 months and thereafter extend it to the extent required.
